North ATLANTIC Treaty Organization (NATO)

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was founded in 1949, primarily to promote democratic values and safeguard the freedom and security of member countries through political and, if all else fails, military means. To further this goal, representatives of member countries frequently meet to exchange views and information on certain topics. On this occasion, MUN@TIU2023 will simulate a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO's highest-level decision-making body.

TOPIC: Maintaining Security and Collective Defense in Consideration of the Russo-Ukrainian Conflict
(Advance LEVEL)

Although NATO focuses on the security of its member countries first, it has partnership frameworks that extend cooperation to non-member countries. Among those countries is Ukraine - a nation that is very vocal about expanding its cooperation with NATO amidst its conflict with Russia, even requesting accelerated membership. The implications of Ukraine’s request are wide-ranging yet tied to the ever-heated relationship between NATO and Russia. With the conflict in Ukraine still unresolved and Russia's future actions unknown, the urgency of a new strategy is paramount in this evolving situation. Further, given the possible emergence of similar situations elsewhere that may pose a threat to NATO, the broader range of complex threats and challenges to Allied territories, interests, and common values must be addressed.
