United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Established in 1945 by the United Nations (UN) Charter, the Economic and Social Council is an important element of the United Nations that provides general guidance and coordination related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As one of the six main organs of the UN, ECOSOC’s mandate is to promote international cooperation in economic, social, cultural, educational, health and related issues. It serves as a single forum for policy analysis, assessment, and recommendations to the Member States. The Council is also in charge of ensuring that all UN conferences in the economic, social, and environmental domains are followed up on in an integrated and coordinated manner, as well as promoting the balanced integration of the three pillars of sustainable development.

TOPIC: Addressing Concerns on Demographic Crises Worldwide (BEGINNER LEVEL)

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to achieve a decent quality of life on a healthy planet for all by 2030. Unfortunately, we are not on track to achieve the SDGs due to the unsustainable growth in our global population. A larger population will require more natural resources, and more land for housing, infrastructure, food, and water. More of us means more pollution and climate emissions that threaten us all. Conversely, since 1950, we have been facing a long-term decline in the global fertility rate, with some countries facing an alarming population decline. Added to social, cultural, and economic factors over the years, these problems are only worsening. It is now or never to stem the tide of the crisis.
